What is Radial Angioplasty ? Best Cardiologist in Apollo Kolkata - Dr. Aritra Konar

Coronary angiography is an imaging test that allows you to visualize the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart and diagnose the degree of blockage. Angiography is used to determine which treatment option is best for the patient.

Traditionally, coronary angiography is done by inserting a plastic tube into the femoral artery, the artery that supplies the legs. Through this plastic tube, called a sheath, a small-bore plastic tube is passed through the heart and a dye is injected to take pictures in the catheterization lab.

The femoral route of angiography was considered uncomfortable for the patient

  •  As a patient, you must lie down with your legs straight for at least 6 hours. · May cause back pain, difficulty urinating, and local injection site pain.

  •  Higher chance of bleeding complications and on-site blood sampling. This is inconvenient for patients and rarely requires blood transfusions.

To circumvent these problems, there is a new development called radial angioplasty that is safe and convenient for patients. The radial artery, the artery that supplies the hand, is one of them and is one of the most common methods of coronary angiography today. It follows the same procedure as the femoral root, but with minimal complications and bleeding potential.
