What is ILR implantation?
An implantable loop recorder(ILR), also known as an insertable cardiac monitor, is a small device that is implanted under the skin of the chest for cardiac monitoring, to record the heart's electrical activity for an extended period. This device acts as an electrocardiogram (ECG), continuously recording electrical signals from the heart. This helps find arrhythmias that can cause various problems such as fainting.
A special group of cells usually initiates an electrical signal to initiate a heartbeat. These cells are located in the sinus node (SA). This nodule is located in the right atrium, the upper right chamber of the heart. The signal travels rapidly through the heart's conduction system to the ventricles. These are the two lower chambers of your heart. When it moves, the signal causes nearby parts of the heart to contract. This helps the heart to pump blood in a coordinated manner.
Disturbances in this signaling pathway can lead to cardiac arrhythmias. These can cause many problems such as B. Fainting and palpitations. An arrhythmia (arrhythmia) prevents the heart from pumping as much blood as it needs. A temporary reduction in blood flow to the brain causes fainting. When the rhythm returns to normal, people usually regain consciousness.
If you have fainting spells or heart palpitations and other tests are still unanswered, you may need a loop recorder. Repeated fainting spells can negatively affect physical and mental health. Also, certain types of fainting greatly increase the chance of sudden death. These fainting spells should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.
Older people with unexplained falls may also need a loop recorder. Healthcare providers may use it in people who are thought to have epilepsy and do not respond to medication. In either case, the recorder can determine if abnormal rhythms are a problem.
The procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
